Are Breast Implants Safe?
Some plastic surgeons are trying to fine tune surgical procedures for breast augmentation to reduce recovery time. Traditionally breast augmentation surgery involves two to three weeks of pain. But a new technique is reducing that time drastically. The surgery takes half an hour under general anesthesia. Determined in advance are implant size, and five different measurements are used rather than using trial and error during surgery.
Electric cautery produces near-bloodless incisions, and there is no traumatic tearing of tissue. It works best with incisions under the breasts, whether with saline or silicone implants are used, and whether they are placed over or under the chest muscle. The vast majority of patients can brush their hair or shower the same day, and can return to driving in two to four days.
This type of plastic surgery has a high satisfaction rate, but it is still not uncommon for additional surgical procedures to be necessary. In many cases, the body recognizes an implant as a foreign material and forms a fibrous capsule around it. This also happens with other types of surgical implants such as hip and knee replacements. With breast implants, the capsular contraction as it is known can make the breasts feel unusually hard. Sometimes this results in distorted appearance and discomfort.
However, scar tissue can now be removed, and the implants can be replaced in such a way as to look much more natural. However, the secondary surgeries are more complicated to perform than original augmentations. It is best to have a very experienced surgeon who specializes in such cases. Problems like capsular contracture, abnormal nipple position, or breasts placed too far apart can and should be corrected.
As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, breast augmentation must take into account the patient’s needs, and what can realistically be done. Like rhinoplasty, it is not a one size fits all procedure.
