Breast Implants Now the Top Cosmetic Surgery in the Country

Even in this tough economy, women of all ages are finding ways to give their bodies a “boost”, according to a recent ABC News report. While some cosmetic surgeries have declined, other procedures have gone up and according to a top plastic surgeon Tampa residents can be sure that this is a sign of the times.

Even though it’s supposed to be a place for rest and relaxation, the beach is where many women say they feel the most anxious. And it’s all because many of them wish they could fill out a bikini in all the right places. 19-year old Alicia Pacheco of Tulare said she’s ready to change her body and boost her breast size, after years of jokes from her peers. “I got teased a lot in junior high and high school and it bothered me a lot.” Alicia hopes to pursue a career in the fashion industry and wants to fit into those fashions, herself. “Just do it for myself and not for anyone else.” She researched her options and decided on silicone breast implants because they tend to have the most natural feel.

The American Society for Plastic Surgeons just released a report showing breast augmentation is now the number one most-performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S. Last year, more than 307,000 breast augmentations were performed, moving liposuction to the number two spot. Doctors say the trend coincides with the F.D.A.’s 2006 approval of the use of silicone gel implants in a 10-year-study that found them safe and effective in the wake of the health scare from the early 90’s. Regarding popular procedures like breast augmentation Tampa plastic surgeons are seeing that more and more women are asking about silicone versus the saline implants. Previously, many women shied away from silicone because of the perception that saline is safer than silicone if the implant were to leak. But technology has made the new generation of implants, safer than the ones in the past.

Tampa breast implants specialists explain further why silicone has become safer because the actual material doesn’t leak out of the implant. “You can see the silicone comes out but what cohesive means is that all of those silicone particles are attached together, so as soon as I let go, even though I let go, the rest of the gel will contain the compromised portion.”

But most doctors also inform their patients of another critical step. Tampa plastic surgeons tell their patients, their first breast augmentation surgery won’t be their last. In fact, they say, they can expect another surgery in 10 to 15 years from their original one for both health and cosmetic reasons. Saline implants will eventually flatten and need to be replaced and the F.D.A. also recommends another surgery for silicone because that’s often the only way to tell if an implant has a rupture. Doctors say the bottom line: today’s advances in the science of reshaping give women more choices. For Alicia, weighing the risks and the options left her with high hopes that modern medicine can finish where
nature left off.

Questions About Breast Augmentation

Who is an ideal candidate for breast augmentation surgery?

The best candidates for breast augmentation surgery are women who are in good emotional health and have a good understanding of the procedure. Candidates should also have a history of physical activity, and maintain a healthy diet. Breast augmentation surgery is an ideal option to enhance your figure, but not to change it entirely.

What causes a saline breast implant to deflate or rupture?

A breast implant may deflate if the saline solution leaks through a damaged valve, or through a puncture in the shell of the implant. Deflation may happen instantaneously, or over the course of several days. An implant may deflate for several reasons including:

  • Overfilling or underfilling
  • Capsular contracture (when the scar or capsule around your implant tightens)
  • Trauma
  • Intense physical force
  • Excessive compression during a mammogram

Who is not eligible for breast implants?

Women who should not have breast augmentation surgery include those who are:

  • Currently pregnant or nursing
  • Have an existing malignant or pre-malignant cancer
  • Have an active infection anywhere in your body

When will I be able to wear an underwire bra?

Your plastic surgeon will give personalized recommendations, but waiting three months after breast augmentation surgery before wearing an underwire bra is typical. This is because your body will be forming scar tissue around your new implant during this time period. The pressure from the wire could cause your scar tissue to develop in an indentation pattern around the wires; and this could be permanent.

How long must I wait before I can exercise and resume strenuous activities following surgery?

While recovery periods will vary by person, at least a week off is generally recommended, as the first few days following surgery are the most uncomfortable. Dr. Pratt will let you know when you can resume exercising, but the average time is three to four weeks. It is very important that you do not allow sweat into the incision while you are healing. Therefore, besides exercise you should not sun tan or stay out in the sun for a long period of time.

Will my breasts still move like natural breasts?

This will depend on several factors, including the type of implant you receive and how your body responds to and holds the implant. Many women have breast implants that are soft and move nicely, while other women have results that are more firm. In some cases, women experience very hard breasts due to capsular contracture that need to be surgically corrected.

What effect does smoking have on the healing process?

If you smoke following your procedure, your blood vessels will become constricted, which reduces the blood supply and oxygen to your surgical area. Your affected tissues need this blood and oxygen in order to heal. Therefore, smoking will cause you to heal more slowly. Breast augmentation patients are advised to quit smoking at least six weeks prior to surgery and not smoke until they have healed completely.

Will I lose sensation in my nipples?

You may experience changes in nipple sensation following implant surgery. This is not to say that your sensation will always decrease; in some cases it will increase. The sensation can range from mild to intense and can be temporary or long lasting; even permanent.

Must I be at my ideal weight before undergoing breast augmentation surgery?

You need not be at your ideal weight, but you should be close. A substantial weight loss after receiving breast implants could alter the results and lead to a drooping or reduction in side. A significant weight gain could also cause an unsatisfactory increase in the size of your breasts.

VASERLipo vs. Traditional liposuction

VASER Lipo is currently considered to be the globally preferred choice for patients considering undergoing a liposuction procedure. Also known as LipoSelection, it is an advanced method of contouring the body and removing unwanted body fat with selective precision.

It is a preferred alternative to the harsh methods of traditional liposuction because it uses the very latest technology, utilising ultrasound to lightly reshape your form.   What significantly differentiates VASER Lipo from the traditional methods of liposuction is that VASER’s technology allows it to be used to target unwanted fatty tissue whilst nerves, blood vessels and other tissue untouched. This allows for smooth results and a swift recovery for the patient.

Conversely, traditional liposuction is not such a pleasant experience for the patient. Traditional liposuction employs a metal tube that the doctor has to manually manipulate inside the patient’s body.  This can often lead to a great deal of bleeding, swelling and the destruction of surrounding tissue.  Because VASER Lipo involves the precise use of ultrasound technology, the same problems simply does not occur, leading to a quicker, safer and less invasive procedure.

One of the biggest problems with traditional liposuction is that after the procedure, the person could still have loose skin.  This could only be resolved by cutting the skin away.  With VASER Lipo, the skin can naturally tighten after the procedure to produce a more sculpted look.

VASER Lipo procedures do not require general anaesthesia.  There is no surgery, so the risks are greatly lowered and recovery times greatly increased.

Because the VASER Lipo treatment emulsifies the fat, it is simply suctioned away as a liquid, rather than the more traumatic traditional approach of sucking lumps of fat from the body. Sometimes a small amount of liquid fat is absorbed back into the body, but blood tests show it does not enter the bloodstream.

With traditional liposuction procedures, the patient may require several months in bandages.  With VASER Lipo, people can go back to work within a few days.  They will wear bandages for a few weeks, but that’s nothing compared to healing and recovery times of ordinary traditional liposuction.

The results of VASER Lipo are permanent, meaning that the body does not regenerate removed fat cells.  Some of the other top advantages of VASER Lipo are:

1. No overnight stay in hospital required
2. Procedure under local anaesthetic
3. Limited discomfort and quick recovery times
4. Minimal bleeding or bruising
5. Safest and most effective procedure available

VASER Lipo is suitable for use on fatty areas all over the body and is currently used to remove fat from areas such as the neck and chin area, breasts, chest and arms, thighs, hips and buttocks, and the stomach and waist.  It is a versatile non-invasive approach to removing unwanted fat and sculpting the body for a more pleasing physical appearance.

VASER Lipo is a safe and quick alternative to traditional liposuction with little discomfort and incredible results.
